  14.            PRESIDENT PRESENTS MEDAL OF FREEDOM TO ASHE
  15.  
  16. (Washington, DC)    President Clinton awarded a posthumous 
  17. Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian 
  18. honor, to tennis great Arthur Ashe at the National Sports Awards 
  19. Ceremony at Constitution Hall Sunday night.
  20.  
  21.      Presenting the medal to Ashe's widow, Jeanne, the President 
  22. noted that Ashe, "battled his way to the top rung of 
  23. international tennis -- and he did it with an inner strength and 
  24. outward dignity that marked his game every bit as much as that 
  25. dazzling crosscourt backhand."

  27.      Speaking earlier Sunday at the White House, the President 
  28. called Ashe, "An extraordinary man who lived by the words, `Thou 
  29. shalt not close a door behind you.'"  
  30.  
  31.      The National Sports Awards will be telecast tonight on NBC.
